A great part of a tea ceremony is about preparing the space, cleaning the cups, the pot, wiping the heater, bringing water. Chop wood, carry water as they say.
As we sit in a group in silence, not much happens. The tea is scooped in the pot. The water is brought to boil, then poured over the leaves. The hot water opens up the leaves, as they release their sweet or pungent aroma in exchange. While still steaming, the tea pours into the cups, ready to be served.
It’s as simple as it can get. While it could not be more abundant to the senses.
The theme of simplicity kept reoccurring this week - just as I’ve been doing my yearly seasonal cleanse of minimising my meals to kitchari (yellow split mung beans with rice), pumpkin soup, veggie broth, rice, potatoes and crackers for 3 days. The simplicity of these meals somehow filled them with more intention - less somehow truly became more.
Meanwhile, we’ve at last repainted our bright orange walls to white - finally settling in and making it feel like home after 3-4 months of living here.
A real demonstration of how much a simple white wall can give - I never want to take this for granted ever again.
A busy week of work everyday, during my pms, repainting and autumn arriving - could by no accident be the week I’ve been reminded of the medicine of simplicity.
